Though a fortified castle, Château de Massillan was mostly used as a hunting lodge by Diane de Poitiers, the notorious and rather powerful favourite of Henry II.

  • The château left private aristocratic hands in 1980 to eventually open as a luxury hotel in 2002 which has quickly collected a number of notable awards.

    Its 13 bedrooms as well as the rest of the castle interiors showcase a design inspired by the castle history and its original features masterfully blend with the tasteful contemporary touches.

    The 24 acres of originally hunting grounds now serve as a stunning parkland and vineyard that you can explore during your stay.

    The handsome swimming pool in the courtyard comes very handy during hot summers.

    13 rooms – Double, Tower Rooms, Luxury, Superior, and Suite.

    Top rooms – incredibly difficult choice but the the stand alone intimate suite has space and views.

    Prices start from £170 a night not including breakfast.

    Eat & Drink

    The approach ‘take it or leave it’ usually results in guests gladly taking the dish-of-the-day lunch and set course dinner, to the point that a reservation is essential if you want to enjoy the hotel’s classic French affair.

    You can take your drink pretty much anywhere within the hotel or its grounds.

    Activities

    The 45 acres of parkland should keep you active enough but there is also a swimming pool set in the stunning courtyard.

    The hotel also works closely with local vineyards and can take you on a tour with someone else behind the wheel.

    Relaxation

    Settle with your favorite read in one of the pool sun loungers or you can take a leisurely stroll through the chateaus 19th-century walled kitchen garden.
